Pauway Story:Power Plant in Cuba
200 MW Smart City Peaking Power Plant Project in Cuba
In May 2016, Pauway Energy was awarded the 200 MW National Grid Smart City Peaking Power Plant Project in Cuba, which was the largest export project of light diesel power plants in China at that time and a landmark project in China-Latin America energy cooperation.
Project Background & Tender Award
Cuba has long been facing unstable power supply and insufficient peak-shaving capacity. This project is designed to strengthen grid peaking regulation and emergency power supply. The contract value is approximately RMB 450 million.
Core Technology & Equipment Configuration
Generating Units
Adopting PWM2750HV-60 diesel generator sets (supporting MTU technology), each with a prime power of 2000 kW at 60 Hz. A total of 90 units are installed, with a total designed capacity of 200 MW.
Project Positioning
An intelligent peaking power plant with fast start-stop, grid interconnection and remote monitoring functions, adapted to the stability requirements of the Cuban power grid.
Delivery & Commissioning Schedule
- The first batch of units passed acceptance and was shipped on May 16, 2017.
- The last 6 units were loaded and delivered by the end of January 2018.
- Partial grid connection and commercial operation were achieved in the first half of 2018.
Project Significance & Challenges
Industry Benchmark
Set a record for China’s largest export of light diesel power plants, verifying the reliability of high-end Chinese power generation equipment in complex overseas grid environments.
Geopolitical & Cooperation Value
Deepened energy cooperation between China and Cuba, laying a solid foundation for Chinese enterprises to participate in Cuba’s power grid upgrading.
Execution Challenges
technical difficulties such as equipment anti-corrosion and heat dissipation under tropical climate conditions.
